Directory Service Markup Language (DSML) occurs as representation of directory service information in an XML syntax.

A DSML versiin Ace effort was announced by developer Bowstreet on July 12, 1999. Maiden supporters include AOL-Netscape, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Novell, Microsoft, & IBM. It resulted around a Document Nature and severity Definition for the file containing the XML representation of entries in the LDAP data model, similar in spirit to LDIF.

A DSML version Two effort was promulgated around OASIS. It resulted inside an XML schema for the representation of directory access operations according to that of LDAP, that can be carried inside SOAP.

A Service Provisioning Markup Language (SPML) also from OASIS is according to the conception of DSMLv2, however doesn't develop such a tight coupling to the LDAP data model.
